Standart Pompa Fountain
We measured the street's instinct against water waste.
STANDART POMPA · MARCH 2015
Brief
For World Water Day, Standart Pompa wanted an activation that wouldn't just inform people about water waste — it would measure their instinctive response at street level.
The goal wasn't a commercial film, it was a social experiment: on a topic where we're aware of the issue, what do we actually do when no one is watching?
“Awareness isn't a message — it becomes meaningful when it measures action.”
Insight
Water waste is a topic advertising keeps trying to explain, but everyone already knows. The real question is: when we know, do we act? Even when no one is watching.
The most honest measure of an awareness campaign is the pedestrian's in-the-moment reaction on the street. Delivering a message is easy; measuring instinct shows the brand is genuinely behind the cause.
The Idea
We placed a custom-designed fountain on Bağdat Street. A screen behind the fountain animated a tree in sync with the water: as long as water flowed, the tree withered. When the fountain was turned off, the tree bloomed back to life.
Every pedestrian on Bağdat Street was unwittingly placed in a choice: walk past it running, or stop and turn it off? Those who chose to turn it off were handed a cape and a flower by our team and recorded as "water heroes".
Wither-Bloom Tree
A tree that withers with flow and blooms when stopped
Street Experiment
Bağdat Street — no staged reactions, real pedestrians
Hero Reward
Cape and flower for anyone who stopped it — a "water hero"
Closed-Loop System
Refinement system — zero real waste
Execution
The entire fountain design and production, the synchronized tree animation behind it, the water-flow sensor and the closed-loop refinement system were developed in-house. Installed on Bağdat Street for a day, with on-site operations and documentation.
Our Scope
- Custom fountain mechanics and industrial design
- Flow-synchronized tree animation software
- Closed-loop water refinement system
- On-site setup, operations, cape & flower distribution
- Reaction documentation and video production
Results
Despite cold weather, roughly 30% of pedestrians on Bağdat Street turned the fountain off — well above expectations.
More telling was what they said afterward: most described it not as heroism but as "just the right thing to do." It wasn't a gesture for the cape — it was the quiet behaviour of men and women who stopped mid-crowd, turned off the tap and walked on.
Because the fountain ran on a closed-loop refinement system, not a single real drop of water was wasted by day's end. The campaign's message held in the mechanics, not in metaphor.
